Self Defence Southport — Total Combat Martial Arts

Self Defence Classes FAQ — Southport

The questions we hear most often, answered honestly. Can't see what you're after? Contact us or call — we're glad to help.

Do I need any experience? Am I too unfit or too old?

No experience needed, and no, you're almost certainly not too unfit or too old. Our classes are built for ordinary people, and many members start with zero background and average fitness. You progress at your own pace, and you only need to manage that first session — everything grows from there.

Is there a women-only class?

Yes, we run women-led sessions, and many women also train in our mixed classes. We're upfront about one thing: even in our women's training, we practise against realistic size and strength, because a real attacker is usually bigger and stronger. Training only gently or only with other women would have no effect in reality. See our women's self defence page for the full explanation.

What's the minimum age?

Our self defence classes are for ages 16 and over. For younger children and families, ask us about suitable options — and note that as a UK Children's University learning destination, eligible younger members can earn Children's University credits (Passport-to-Learning hours) toward graduation by attending.

What should I wear and bring?

Comfortable clothes you can move freely in — a T-shirt and joggers or leggings — plus a water bottle. Trainers are fine. You don't need any special kit or uniform to begin.

How much does it cost? Is the first class really free?

Your first class is genuinely free with no obligation. After that we keep pricing simple and transparent — see free trial & pricing for pay-as-you-go and membership options ([PRICE — TBC]).

Do classes run all year, or do you close for holidays?

Classes run year-round with proper continuity, including through the school holidays. There are no long seasonal shutdowns, so your skills keep building and you never have to restart after a break.

Do you run one-off workshops or group bookings?

Yes — open workshops, short courses, and private sessions for workplaces, hen parties, community groups and clubs. See workshops & courses for details and to enquire.

Does self defence actually work in real situations?

It does — provided it's trained realistically. That's the whole reason we practise against partners of different sizes and strengths, including men, rather than in a soft, compliant way. Most of what keeps you safe is awareness, avoidance and de-escalation; the physical skills are the backup, and we make sure they're tested under genuine (but controlled) pressure.

Will I have to spar or get hurt?

No. This isn't a fight gym and you won't be thrown into hard sparring. Drills and scenarios are controlled and supportive, with intensity managed carefully by the coaches. The aim is to build skill safely, not to bang each other up.

Where are you, and which areas do you cover?

We're based in Southport (Merseyside, [PR8/PR9]) with parking and public transport nearby — full details on our contact page. Members travel in from Birkdale, Churchtown, Ainsdale, Crosby, Formby, Ormskirk and across Sefton and west Lancashire.

How do I book?

Easiest is to book a free trial online, or call [PHONE] and we'll book you straight in. Still unsure? Read our beginner's guide first.
