Self Defence Southport — Total Combat Martial Arts

Women's Self Defence Classes in Southport

Our women's self defence classes in Southport are about one thing: real, usable confidence. Not the false confidence that comes from a slick routine you've only ever practised against a partner who lets you win — the genuine kind that comes from knowing you've handled pressure and come through it. Whether you're walking back from the station, crossing a quiet car park, heading out in the town centre or just want to feel steadier day to day, you'll learn skills built for the situations women actually face.

Classes are welcoming, supportive and run year-round with proper continuity, including through the school holidays — no long breaks, so your skills keep building rather than fading. You can start with no experience whatsoever.

What you'll learn

Most of staying safe happens long before any physical contact, so that's where we begin and where we spend most of our time:

Why women in our classes train alongside men — on purpose

This is the most important thing on this page, so we'll be direct about it. In a real assault, the attacker is almost never another woman your own size. They're usually bigger, stronger and very often male. If your only experience of "defending yourself" is practising gentle, compliant techniques against other women who don't really resist, then the first time you meet genuine size and strength it would have no effect in reality and would be ineffective — and worse, it would have given you a dangerous, false sense of confidence.

That's why women in our classes train alongside men, deliberately, in every lesson. You'll practise your escapes and boundaries against partners who are larger and stronger than you, with realistic (but always controlled and respectful) resistance. It's never a free-for-all and it's never intimidating — coaches manage the intensity carefully and build you up gradually. But it is honest. By the time you've trained with us, your techniques have been pressure-tested against the kind of opponent you'd actually need them for. That's the difference between a class that makes you feel safer and one that makes you safer.

And you won't be the only woman in the room. Many women train in every single session, at every level, in a genuinely supportive environment. If you'd prefer to begin in one of our women-led sessions to find your feet first, that's absolutely fine — see the class timetable for the women's session times.

A supportive, women-friendly environment

Realistic does not mean intimidating. Our coaches set a calm, patient, no-ego tone. You work at your own pace, ask as many questions as you like, and never get thrown in the deep end. Plenty of members started exactly where you might be now: nervous, unsure, certain they'd be the least capable person there. They weren't, and you won't be either.

Real-life Southport scenarios

We keep training grounded in the places you actually go. We work through the walk from Southport station or a town-centre bar back to the car, navigating quiet or poorly lit car parks, what to do if someone follows you, dealing with unwanted attention on a night out, and online-to-offline safety such as first dates and meet-ups. The scenarios change, but the principles — awareness, distance, voice, escape — stay the same.

Suitable for everyone

Our women's self defence classes are open to all women aged 16 and over, of every fitness level and body type, with no experience needed. You do not have to be fit, sporty or strong. If you can turn up, you can train. As a UK Children's University learning destination, the wider club also lets eligible younger members earn Children's University credits (Passport-to-Learning hours) toward graduation by attending.

Groups, private & workplace sessions

We also run women-only workshops for friend groups, hen parties, workplaces and community groups. They make a brilliant, empowering get-together — see our workshops and courses for options, or bring a friend along to a regular class.
